Pick movies, share plans, explore LA

The Shift in Film Culture
Independent films with smaller budgets are on the rise (and Hollywood is noticing). Instead of sticking to predictable blockbusters, people are seeking out unique, underrepresented stories. But with over 300 theaters and screening venues in Los Angeles, where do you start?
Enter Good1s
Good1s uses web scrapers to curate up-to-date information on screenings happening across LA. Select your preferred films, share your selections with friends, and embark on your movie adventure throughout the city.

First impressions of Good1’s

Original website
Since Good1’s is relatively unknown, we began the project by conducting user interviews to observe how users interacted with the unfamiliar website as well as explore how it could be integrated into their lives.

Using a mix of behavioral, attitudinal, and task-specific questions, I designed the interview to uncover both the pain points and strengths of Good1's features.

Few users even located the features, much less accomplish the tasks correctly. In fact multiple users misclicked and expressed frustrations before giving up on the task entirely.
Takeaways
Key insights
Overall, users had a negative experience with the website due to its unconventional practices and unappealing visual design. The design and lack of feedback led users to overlook key features.
“Too much text... like Craigslist.”
-- Kate, 19
“I don’t really understand what is going on.”
-- Olivia, 24
“It could be convenient for comparing movies from different places.”
-- Jason, 26
When asked if they would use the website in their daily lives, only 50% of them said yes.

Old Hollywood aesthetic
The client wanted to highlight Good1’s unique character through a minimalist, experimental design style. We drew inspiration from text-driven websites and vintage Hollywood cinema.

wireframing
Low-fidelities
I tested different layouts to capture the look and feel of old theater signs and vintage movie tickets with a digital twist.

Usability tests
A/B testing
We conducted alpha/beta testing to understand which design choices and placements users gravitated towards.

Feedback
The combination of vertical and horizontal scrolling in both versions was disorienting.
Alpha’s buttons have higher usability because they are bigger and more pronounced.
Beta’s color palette has more character but both versions need more color.

wireframing
Desktop and mobile high fidelities
After receiving the user feedback, we returned to the drawing board and brainstormed a new design system along with mobile screens.
